Earlier this month, Epic Games announced the release of the mobile Fortnite: Battle Royale. The test version of this extremely popular online shooter debuted a few days ago. Although it is available only for iOS devices (we would like to remind you that the title will also appear on Androde), and only for people with special invitations, who can receive it after filling in the appropriate form, it has almost become a huge hit from the very beginning. And as we know, popularity goes hand in hand with a lot of money. According to the Sensor Tower, in the first 72 hours since the beta Fortnite: Battle Royale debut, the game has earned a round million dollars on Apple’s mobile devices. Currently, its profits are around 1.5 million dollars. This is much more than other battle royale games available to users of smartphones and tablets, such as Knives Out and Rules of Survival.
These amounts make an additional impression when you consider the fact that Fortnite: Battle Royale is a completely free title. Players have therefore spent this money exclusively on cosmetic items. In this context, it is worth noting that, based on this type of micropayment alone, Epic Games achieved about a third of the results that Pokemon GO ($4.9 million) and Clash Royale ($4.6 million) had achieved since its launch on iOS devices.
But should we be surprised by these results? It’s not so long since we know that battle royal online shooters are the last “cry of fashion” in the electronic entertainment industry. Titles like Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds or Fortnite: The Battle Royale stormed the hearts of millions of PC and console players around the world, now it’s time for smartphone and tablet users. The question is which production will prove to be the king of this market? We must admit that the duel between Fortnite: Battle Royale and PUBG Mobile, which recently went beyond the borders of China, promises to be extremely interesting.
Fortnite: Battle Royale is a third person action game from Epic Games that offers battle royal gameplay. This studio is one of the best known in the world. For many years, the company has created the Unreal and Gears of War series, and in addition it is highly respected for the Unreal Engine technology, which drives a number of projects of other developers, such as Final Fantasy VII Remake from Square Enix, Tekken 7 from Bandai Namco or PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds from Bluehole. Fortnite: The Battle Royale for Windows PC platform has evolved from Fortnite, but it’s free, stand-alone production and does not require a “stand”.
Fortnite: The Battle Royale is a multiplayer game that relies on a fight until there is only one player on the board. A hundred people are taken to a big flying bus that takes them over the surface of a big island, which is the main place of the action. At a given moment, players jump out of the vehicle and glide down, trying to hit the zone that they think is best for them to start the race, e.g. near the buildings. This is all the more important because at the beginning of the game we have only a pick up, and we have to get all the necessary weapons and items on our own. Therefore, we have a better chance of finding something useful, for example, in one of the houses on a farm. Of course, the fans also fall out of the killed enemies.
The strategy of the game depends only on us. You can run around the map trying to kill all the players you meet and hide in one of the houses and pray that no one else will come here. You need to set traps or find a suitable position and shoot with a sniper rifle. However, it should be remembered that over time, the playing area decreases and people outside the safe area take constant damage until they finally die (unless they manage to return to the correct area).
Fortnite: The Battle Royale is different from competing titles such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, an element known for its basic Fortnite, which is the ability to destroy buildings, trees, etc. to extract raw materials. They are useful when you build your own structures in real time – when you are in the open air and someone starts shooting at you, you can put up wooden walls to protect you from bullets while running. Another example is the possibility of building temporary stairs to get to the roof of the building.
Epic Games was originally founded under the name of Descendants of Computer Systems in 1991 by Tim Sweeney in Rockville. The descendant of Computer Systems released its first product, ZZT, in the same year. During the development of the game, the studio changed its name to Epic MegaGames. Gradually, Epic grew with its shareware games, including Epic Pinball, Jill of the Jungle, Jazz Jackrabbit, Jazz Jackrabbit 2 and One Must Fall: 2097. In 1997, Epic purchased Safari Software in its entirety, and some of their titles were released under the “Epic Classics” brand together with Epic’s games. In 1998, Epic MegaGames released Unreal, a first-person shooter, which has grown into a series of its own. The company has also started licensing the engines of this series of games. In 1999, the company changed its name to Epic Games and moved its headquarters to Cary. In 2007, Epic Games purchased a majority stake in the Polish People Can Fly studio in order to strengthen its cooperation with the following companies
Epic is the creator of a series of game engines. Each Unreal Engine, as they are called, includes support for a graphics renderer, sound processing, physics engine, and development tools. Since the second version, they support vehicles, and since the third version, pixel shaders, dynamic physics supported by PhysX. In April 2015, the fourth version, advertised with photorealistic graphics, was published. In September 2015, Epic announced free access to the engine and its source code.
